Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) is a treatment tool used in physiotherapy to create controlled muscle contractions using gentle electrical stimulation.

At Great North Physiotherapy, NMES may be incorporated into rehabilitation when a muscle is having difficulty activating or needs additional support while rebuilding strength after an injury, surgery or period of reduced activity.

What Is NMES?

NMES uses small electrodes placed on the skin over a targeted muscle. These electrodes deliver controlled electrical impulses that stimulate the nerves responsible for activating that muscle.

The result? The muscle contracts — similar to what happens when you voluntarily tighten or use it.

Your physiotherapist controls the location, intensity and timing of the stimulation based on the muscle being treated and your rehabilitation goals.

Why Would My Physiotherapist Use NMES?

After an injury or surgery, sometimes simply trying harder to contract a muscle isn't enough.

Pain, swelling, immobilization and changes in how the nervous system communicates with a muscle can make it difficult to achieve a strong contraction.

NMES can provide additional stimulation to help that muscle activate while you work on restoring normal movement and strength.

It may be incorporated into rehabilitation to:

  • Improve muscle activation
  • Support strength development
  • Limit muscle weakness or loss of muscle mass during periods of reduced activity
  • Help retrain muscles after injury or surgery
  • Improve the quality of muscle contractions during exercise
  • Support the transition back to normal movement and activity

What Is NMES Commonly Used For?

NMES can be useful in a variety of rehabilitation settings, particularly when muscle activation or weakness is limiting progress.

One common example is quadriceps rehabilitation after a knee injury or surgery, when fully activating the thigh muscles can be challenging.

Your physiotherapist may also consider NMES during rehabilitation for other orthopedic or sports injuries when additional muscle activation would be beneficial.

 

What Does NMES Feel Like?

You'll initially feel a tingling or buzzing sensation underneath the electrodes. As the intensity increases, you'll begin to feel and see the targeted muscle contract.

The sensation can feel unusual at first, but treatment should remain tolerable. Your physiotherapist will gradually adjust the intensity and check in with you throughout treatment.

Do I Exercise While Using NMES?

Often, yes.

One of the ways NMES can be incorporated into physiotherapy is by combining the stimulation with active exercise.

For example, your physiotherapist may have you intentionally contract the muscle or complete a specific movement while NMES provides additional stimulation.

This helps connect the electrical stimulation with the movement patterns and muscle activation we're working to restore.
