Every September, communities across Ontario recognize Rowan’s Law Day, a vital reminder of the importance of concussion awareness, prevention, and recovery. At Great North Physiotherapy, we are proud to join this movement by raising awareness and supporting athletes, parents, and coaches in understanding the serious impact of head injuries.
What is Rowan’s Law?
Rowan’s Law is named after Rowan Stringer, a young rugby player from Ontario who tragically passed away in 2013 due to multiple concussions. Her story led to the introduction of Rowan’s Law (Concussion Safety), 2018, legislation that sets out mandatory requirements for concussion education, removal-from-sport protocols, and return-to-play procedures.
This law helps ensure that athletes of all ages are better protected and that families, schools, and sports organizations have the necessary knowledge to make informed and safe choices.
Why Concussion Awareness is Critical
Concussions can occur in any sport or recreational activity, including hockey, soccer, gymnastics, and cycling. Symptoms are not always obvious and may include:
- Headache or pressure in the head
- Dizziness or balance issues
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light or noise
- Difficulty concentrating or remembering
Early recognition and proper management are key. Returning to play too soon increases the risk of further injury, which can have long-lasting effects.
How Great North Physiotherapy Can Help
Our team specializes in concussion management and rehabilitation. We provide assessments, personalized recovery plans, and guidance on safe return to school, work, and sport. Whether you’re an athlete, a parent, or a coach, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
How You Can Get Involved
- Wear purple on Rowan’s Law Day to show your support.
- Educate yourself and others about the symptoms and protocols of concussions.
- Encourage open conversations — athletes should always feel safe to speak up about how they’re feeling.
At Great North Physiotherapy, we believe awareness saves lives. By spreading the message of Rowan’s Law Day, we can protect our athletes, strengthen our communities, and ensure safer participation in the sports we love.
